Marathon!

We’re going on Week Three of ICU and still no end in sight. Calvin is stable and trying to get off the vent, recover from his surgery, and maintain a stable neurological status. We’ve had lots of not-so-fun times with seizures and pain. It seems we come over the top of one hill just to see another peak in front of us. Ah well, one day at a time, right? If you’re still praying for us please pray for good health for Darryl and me as we juggle job, family, hospital, meals, etc. Pray that Calvin would have no repeat infection and would be able to wean off the vent, have seizures under control and have less pain.

I’ll post more when the mind is a little less tired and foggy. You know the stickers those fit and fabulous runners display on their cars? I’m going to make them for parents who have docked some serious hospital time. Right now we’re at 15.3 days of ICU. It’s a marathon of a different sort but strenuous beyond belief. Tonight I’m going to take a break from the race and huddle up with my cozy blankets and daydream of laying on sun-filled beaches near sparkling water with a cold gin and tonic in one hand and a book in the other. Escapism? Why yes, I think it is.

  1. Continued prayers for Calvin and your family. Praying that you are given health, strength, and peace. May God supply all of you with what you stand in need of….each second, of each long day. Praying for decreased seizure activity, and no pain for your sweet boy….and that you are all home again, together, very soon!

    We spent once spent 4 1/2 months straight in the hospital with Gavin. I remember those long, tiring days! When I think back to that time, I wonder how our family made it throuh! God supplied us when we were at our weakest moments, and I know he will do the same for you. May He fill you up thoughout this trial!

    Heard the following song today, and thought of your family. I hope it blesses you today, as it has blessed me during times of trial and uncertainty.

    • Please excuse my many errors in the above comment. I suppose this is why I should proofread before submitting my comments! : )

      Hope your day is filled with blessing! : )

    • Wow, 4 1/2 months! We’re babies then compared to you!!! Thank you for the encouragement. I know you can relate.

  2. Dear Kara, may be in a different language, different religion whatever. I pray for Calvin and i hope god helps us. My heart is with you. We had the same in this summer and i know how you feel now. You are doing great and i am sure that your angel sees everything and he will be with you forever

    • Thanks Kenan. Worldwide, it’s hard to see our little ones suffer, eh? Loved your picture of your son.

  3. ooh – that was painful to read! My heart is hurting with you. Sending a hymn that you know, but is good for you and Daryl right now.

    He giveth more grace when the burden grows greater,
    He sendeth more strength when the labors increase;
    To added affliction He addeth His mercy,
    To multiplied trials His multiplied peace.

    When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
    When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
    When we reach the end of our hoarded resources,
    Our Father’s full giving is only begun.

    His love has no limit, His grace has no measure,
    His power has no boundary known unto men;
    For out of his infinite riches in Jesus
    He giveth and giveth and giveth again!

    • Better day today. Love that song.

  4. We are praying that God will continue to take care of you and your family, as He has… we serve a God who is personal, omnipresent, good, kind, faithful, loving, and so much more! He is faithful, He is all powerful, and where else would, or even could we take refuge? God bless you and give you strength to continue along life’s path.

    • Thanks, Kelly. Yes, it’s the truth we can hang our life on, isn’t it? Thanks for the reminder.

  5. Thanks for the update. Praying for all of you. Praying that you will know God’s loving arms underneath all of you, holding you up and giving you the strength you need. I do wish I could come and take a turn sitting with Calvin for you, or spending time with Sophie, Noah, and Evie, but am glad to know you are surrounded by family and friends who do those things. I hope your rest was sweet last night and that today is a great day. A day of good numbers. Love you.

    • And we would love you taking a turn with us! Today was much better, we really are doing well, thanks to God. Love to you too.

  6. Kara, Dave once did 21 days with Ben. it might have been more but I don’t want to accidentally exaggerate. At the two week mark I unexpectedly arrived at the orphanage and walked in the room to witness him holding down my screaming two year old while his skin was “cleaned” to remove scabs so good skin could grow on the 38% of his little burned body.

    Dave and Ben suffered things in those weeks that they may never tell me about. that day I left feeling drained. I was ready to call our insurance co. And arrange an evacuation. God met me there and had mercy on a heart broken mother. The next morning, on the way to see Ben, one of his nurses saw me in the market and told me he was healed. she said it was a miracle and they had no reason to hope for so much change over night. when I arrived at the orphanage Dave told me the healing over night was unbelievable…a miracle. They both came home to me a week later. The house had robe bleached and it was a long time before our boy was back to normal, but his grace brought me through all the way.

    my prayer for you…God give Kara and Daryl Your Grace, which is sufficient for them. give them health. help the older three children to understand their limitations. and please heal Calvin in a was that will bring Glory to you alone.

    love you,

    Rachael

    • Wow. His grace is sufficient, thanks for sharing the evidence of that in your life. Sometimes the miracle is that we have strength for one more day. Thanks for your encouragement.

  7. Still praying for you all. It brings back so many memories for me. Our son was in ICU for three weeks and in the hospital for two months, 2,000 miles from home. I spent the entire time with him, my husband was there for two weeks and one daughter came for a couple weeks, but it was a true marathon in every sense of the word. But God…was there the entire time, never leaving our side, always faithful, always enough, moment by moment. He has promised never, ever to leave you.

    • Thanks Violet (love your name, btw!) That does sound like a marathon, it encourages me to know so many have walked this path even though the details may be different. I’d love to hear more of your story if you feel like sharing (Email: karadedert@yahoo.com).
